There comes a time in your journey when things start to make sense, when the pain, confusion, waiting, and growth all begin to connect under God’s light. This is that moment for me.
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” – Ecclesiastes 4:12
Have you ever paused long enough to ask yourself,
“Who am I, really?”
“Why am I here?”
“How do I begin to live differently?”
These questions aren’t just random thoughts; they’re gentle reminders from God, calling you into the life He planned for you long before you were born (Psalm 139:16).
In the past four parts of this series, I’ve shared parts of my story: times of hurt, growth, letting go, and finding myself. But now, it’s your turn to slow down, take a deep breath, and think about your journey.
Where are you in your own becoming?
Today, we tie it all together with what I’ve come to call “The Threefold Cord - Identity, Purpose, and Process.” These three, when woven together, become a foundation that doesn’t just tell you who you are, but why you’re here, and how to walk that out daily.
1. Identity (Who You Are)
Every journey begins here. Before you can live boldly or serve faithfully, you must first know who you are, not who the world says you are or who your trauma made you become, but who God says you are.
“You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession…” – 1 Peter 2:9
Here’s the truth: when you don’t truly know who you are in Christ, you’ll keep settling for less than what God intended for you.
You’ll settle for relationships that drain you instead of building you.
You’ll find yourself constantly shrinking, second-guessing your worth, and tolerating things that go against your values, all because you don’t see yourself the way God sees you.
When you don’t understand your identity, you become more vulnerable to the enemy’s lies. You start to believe that survival is good enough, that pain is normal, and that chaos is your portion. But the word of God says otherwise.
John 10:10 tells us that Jesus came so that we may have life and have it more abundantly. That means a full, free, and purposeful life, not one filled with confusion, compromise, or broken patterns.
Until you truly embrace your identity in Christ, you’ll keep walking in circles, stuck in cycles that look nothing like freedom. But the moment you start believing what God says about you, that you are chosen (1 Peter 2:9), loved (Romans 5:8), set apart (Jeremiah 1:5), and called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28), everything begins to change.
When you know who you are, you stop settling. You raise your standards, you make room for better, and most importantly, you begin to live like the child of God you truly are.
"Identity isn’t created, it’s revealed. Find it in God before the world gives you a counterfeit."
2. Purpose (Why You’re Here)
Once you know who you are, the next question is: “Why was I created?”
We often view purpose as a distant, grand destination. But many times, it begins with obedience in the present.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” – Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
You don’t stumble into purpose by chance. Purpose is discovered with intentionality.
You find it as you walk closely with God, through prayer, serving, obedience, and learning to hear and trust His voice. It’s not a one-time event; it’s a journey, and that journey often begins with small steps of faith.
Many people wait to feel 100% certain before they move. But with God, clarity often comes after obedience, not before. He reveals more as you take steps. Like Abraham in Genesis 12, God may not show you the whole map, but when you say “yes” and start walking, the next step becomes clearer.
That’s why movement matters. When you start showing up, whether it’s showing up in prayer, showing up to serve in your local church, or simply saying “yes” to God in the little things, you create space for God to lead you.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He will direct your path.” But he directs a path that’s in motion.
So if you feel stuck or unsure, don’t sit and wait for lightning to strike. Start moving. Serve someone, join that prayer group, volunteer in your church, study the Word, or get planted in a community of believers. And as you do, God will begin to reveal more about who you are and why you're here.
Purpose unfolds as you walk with the one who gave it to you.
Ask yourself:
Have you discovered why you are here?
If yes, are you actively walking with God, or still waiting to “feel ready”?
Have you begun to explore the unique assignments He has placed within you?
3. Process (How You Live It Out)
Here’s the uncomfortable part: even when you know who you are and what you were created to do, it still takes daily discipline and godly surrender to live it out.
“Walk worthy of the calling with which you were called.” – Ephesians 4:1
This is where spiritual maturity begins. You build new habits. You guard your heart. You choose consistency over convenience.
But here’s something I wish more people said out loud:
You cannot do this alone.
And that’s where discipleship comes in.
The Missing Link: Discipleship & Spiritual Accountability
I was a believer long before I truly understood who I was in Christ. But looking back, one thing was missing: True discipleship.
Yes, I had accepted Jesus, but no one walked closely with me to help me grow, to correct, disciple, or lovingly challenge me toward maturity. And so, I stumbled through lessons that could have been easier, less painful, if someone had simply discipled me.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” — 2 Timothy 3:16
Discipleship is the bridge between identity and transformation.
It anchors your process.
It teaches obedience.
It refines character.
It nurtures intimacy with God.
Without it, you may know about God, but never fully become the person He created you to be.
One of my favorite pictures of discipleship in Scripture is the relationship between Eli and Samuel. Samuel was young, called by God, but unfamiliar with God’s voice. He had the call, but not the clarity.
In 1 Samuel 3, when God began calling Samuel in the night, the boy kept running to Eli, thinking it was his voice. It took Eli, an older priest, to discern what was really happening. He said:
“Go and lie down, and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” — 1 Samuel 3:9
That moment changed everything. Samuel’s destiny began to unfold not just because he heard God, but because someone discipled him in how to respond.
That’s what discipleship does: it teaches you to recognize God’s voice, to know His ways, and to walk in His will.
So I want to ask you today:
Who is discipling you?
Who are you learning from?
Whose life speaks truth and accountability into yours?
Are you planted in a church where you’re serving, being poured into, and growing in your faith?
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” – Matthew 28:19-20
You don’t need to figure this out alone. You were never meant to.
God places us in communities, churches, and spiritual families so we can be nurtured, sharpened, and equipped.
Discipleship may not always feel glamorous, but it is deeply transformational. And if you're serious about becoming all God designed you to be, then finding a disciple-maker and being one someday is not optional.
Final Reflections: Where Are You Now?
The goal of this final part is not to give you more information, but to lead you into reflection.
Are you still trying to figure out who you are?
Do you feel the pull of purpose, but don’t know where to start?
Have you started walking with God, but feel overwhelmed by the process?
Are you tired of doing life alone?
This is why “On Becoming” exists. We’re building more than a newsletter. We’re creating a safe space for you to rediscover your identity, gain clarity on your purpose, and embrace the process of becoming whole in Christ.
If you’ve connected deeply with this series, don’t slip away quietly. Stick around because we are just getting started.
I’m currently creating free resources to help you go deeper, practical tools, guided frameworks, virtual workshops, and maybe even a program to walk you through this journey step by step. We’ll talk identity, unpack purpose, and navigate the hard parts of growth. Also, I’ll consider inviting sound teachers to educate us more on each topic.
Because the journey from identity to purpose to process is not a solo mission, it’s a discipleship path, and we want to walk with you.
In the End… It’s All Written
“All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.”
— Psalm 139:16
God already wrote the story.
But becoming is your ‘yes’ to reading the script out loud.
Becoming is your ‘yes’ to walking it out, line by line, verse by verse, in real time.
Identity. Purpose. Process.
This is your threefold cord; hold on to it.
You were born for more. You were crafted with intention.
And the world is waiting to see the version of you that only surrender can unlock.
So maybe this is your sign to stop waiting and start walking.
Let’s keep becoming, together. 💜
With Love,
Perpetua.
Amazing!!!
God has a way of connecting dots together and it's so amazing!
I was just reading the words and the Holy Spirit started to highlight some important parts to me.
If you are sensing a strong pull to stay locked in with God.
If you feel so strongly that there's more about you, then I would advise you to read parts 1 to 4 and answer all the reflection questions with a sincere heart.
Thank you, Perpetua.💚😊
