At the start of this year, God gave me the word—Consistency. Naturally, I interpreted that as a call to build habits, systems, and routines in every area of my life. I believed He was asking me to show up daily for my work, health, purpose, and everything in between.
But as the months rolled by, I began to see a deeper truth.
What God was really inviting me into wasn’t just consistency in doing, but consistency in abiding. Because he knew something I was only beginning to understand: Consistency in life flows from consistency in His presence.
"Apart from Me, You Can Do Nothing,"
Jesus said it clearly in John 15:4-5:
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
This scripture resonated with me differently when I began to realize that the moments I felt most weary, inconsistent, and misaligned were when I had quietly disconnected from my source.
Not always in loud or rebellious ways. But maybe I got too busy to pray, or I shifted my gaze from the Lord and started relying on my own strength or the validation of others. Or I abandoned certain instructions for consecration that the lord had given me. And slowly, my fruit began to fade.
That’s when I realized: fruitfulness - whether in your career, calling, or character is not possible without the Vine. And the Vine is Jesus.
How to Stay Consistent by Abiding in God
If you're struggling with discipline, motivation, or spiritual dryness, maybe it’s not a new productivity hack you need. Maybe it’s a return to the secret place. Below are 5 steps that have helped me stay rooted in Him and by extension, consistent in life:
1. Start with the Secret Place
Make daily time with God non-negotiable. Whether it’s 15 minutes or an hour, give Him the first fruits of your day. Let His presence realign your heart, your goals, and your perspective.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
2. Guard Your Focus
Abiding requires intentional focus. The enemy will always present distractions, good ones too. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Evaluate often: “What has my attention right now?”
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on you.” – Isaiah 26:3
3. Maintain a Consecrated Lifestyle
Abiding isn’t just about prayer—it’s about lifestyle. What you watch, how you speak, what you listen to, and who you surround yourself with matter. Live in a way that honors the intimacy you share with the lord.
“Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God...” – Romans 12:1
4. Stay Accountable
You weren’t designed to walk alone. Surround yourself with people who are also rooted in Christ. Find a Bible-believing church if you don’t belong to any. Join a service unit in church. Find a community that stirs you up in love and good works when you start to drift.
“Two are better than one… if one falls, the other can help him up.” – Ecclesiastes 4: 9-10
5. Check the Fruit Regularly
Pause to ask: “Am I seeing the fruits of the Spirit in my life?” (Galatians 5:22–23). Am I becoming more patient? More joyful? More faithful? The fruit reveals the depth of your abiding. If the fruit is missing, go back to the root.
Final Thoughts
Dear friend, consistency isn’t about how disciplined you are, it’s about how connected you are.
So before you beat yourself up for not sticking to your routines, ask yourself this:
“Am I still abiding?”
You weren’t built to run on empty. You were made to live connected to the Source of life. And when you do, the consistency you’ve been striving for becomes the natural outflow of intimacy with Him.
Let your new strategy be this: Abide first, then act.
Till next time,
With Love,
